The history of the rocking chair
The rocking chair is a highly popular product that is found in many homes. It is a chair that rests on two rockers, rather than four feet. The bottom of the rocking chair meets with the ground at only a couple of points, which allows the bearer of the seat to move, or rock back and forth. It is used by many people as a means of relaxation as the chair keeps on rocking once it is given a tiny push by the person who is sitting on it. Rocking chairs can be easily spotted in a lot of homes, as many people like keeping them for relaxation and to relieve mental stress.
The concept of a rocking stool or base has been around for as long as we can remember, and it is also vibrant in alchemic iconography. The ‘rebis’ from alchemy is the symbol that is highly old, and portrays the hermaphrodite, in a half rocking motion. Cradles then followed with the concept of a rocking base, as children’s cots were made with rockers underneath to assist in a better sleep and a playful experience for the child. Soon after, in circa 1700, the rocking horse was invented in Europe. Manufactured in the Victorian times, it is said that the first ever rocking horse was fashioned in Germany. Once the concept of the rocking horse was adopted, many people began to think of a rocking chair.
And approximately 10 years after the invention of the rocking horse, the converted rocking chair was invented in 1710 in Europe. The concept was developed in Yorkshire, England when people changed the feet, or posts of a chair and placed rockers underneath so that the chair would keep on moving back and forth in a rhythmical motion. Previously, people used skates underneath the chairs, but soon, the idea was dropped and curved blades began to be used underneath chairs.
